These days, having a working air conditioner in your truck isn't a luxury - it's a necessity. Heat continues to rise around the country and trying to drive without a working A/C can be genuinely dangerous. If you think your A/C is having trouble, it's important to take it to a commercial truck shop that knows how to work on big rigs!
The sooner you can get your truck worked on, the better. So, let's talk about some of the most common signs that you're having A/C trouble, or will soon.
Obviously, if your A/C isn't blowing cold air, there's a problem. However, there are numerous reasons why an A/C could be malfunctioning, including low coolant levels, clogged vents, or other airflow problems. Aside from making sure your coolant is topped up, it's best to take it to a commercial truck shop to look into the problem.
If you're getting cold air, but the air isn't moving as quickly as you remember it blowing, that's another warning sign. In all likelihood, there's a clog somewhere in the system that's slowing down the air. This isn't a huge problem, but as the clog grows, airflow will continue to reduce, and it will start putting extra strain on the air compressor and fan systems.
Also, pay attention to what the air coming out of your A/C vents smells like. It should be pure and relatively free of any scents. If you smell something bad from the vents, that could indicate that mold is growing in the A/C system. It's also possible, although less likely, that some kind of animal managed to die and get stuck inside your engine compartment. Either way, have it checked out - that bad smell could potentially be a health hazard.
Typically, your A/C shouldn't make much noise besides the light whirr of the fans blowing. If you hear anything louder or more notable - such as rattling or scraping - that's a big red flag that something has come loose within the system. If this has happened, it's only going to keep causing more damage until you get it looked into at a commercial truck repair shop.
